Statistics and Scaling in Disordered Mesoscopic Electron Systems

چکیده
This review is intended to give a pedagogical and unified view on the subject of the statistics and scaling of physical quantities in disordered electron systems at very low temperatures. Quantum coherence at low temperatures and randomness of microscopic details can cause large fluctuations of physical quantities. In such mesoscopic systems a localization-delocalization transition can occur which forms a critical phenomenon. Accordingly, a one-parameter scaling theory was formulated stressing the role of conductance as the (oneparameter) scaling variable. The localized and delocalized phases are separated by a critical point determined by a critical value of conductance. However, the notion of an order parameter was not fully clarified in this theory. The one-parameter scaling theory has been questioned once it was noticed that physical quantities are broadly distributed and that average values are not characteristic for the distributions. Based on presently available analytical and numerical results we focus here on the description of the total distribution functions and their flow with increasing system size. Still, one-parameter scaling theory does work in terms of typical values of the local density of states and of the conductance which serve as order parameter and scaling variable of the localization-delocalization transition, respectively. Below a certain length scale, ξc, related to the value of the typical conductance, local quantities are multifractally distributed. This multifractal behavior becomes universal on approaching the localization-delocalization transition with ξc playing the role of a correlation length. Statistics of wave functions in disordered systems with applications to Coulomb blockade peak spacing
Despite considerable work on the energy-level and wave function statistics of disordered quantum systems, numerical studies of those statistics relevant for electron-electron interactions in mesoscopic systems have been lacking. We plug this gap by using a tight-binding model to study a wide variety of statistics for the twodimensional, disordered quantum system in the diffusive regime. Our res...

In recent years, semiconductor nanostructures have become the model systems of choice for investigation of electrical conduction on short length scales. Quantum transport is studied in a two dimensional electron gas because of the combination of a large Fermi wavelength and large mean free path. In the present work, a numerical method is implemented in order to contribute to the understanding ...
متن کاملTwo interacting particles in a disordered chain IV: Scaling of level curvatures
The curvatures of two-particle energy levels with respect to the enclosed magnetic flux in mesoscopic disordered rings are investigated numerically. We find that the typical value of the curvatures is increased by interactions in the localised regime and decreased in the metallic regime. This confirms a prediction by Akkermans and Pichard (Eur. Phys. J. B 1, 223 (1998)). The interaction-induced...
متن کاملConductance of tubular nanowires with disorder
We calculate the conductance of tubular-shaped nanowires having many potential scatterers at random positions. Our approach is based on the scattering matrix formalism and our results analyzed within the scaling theory of disordered conductors. When increasing the energy the conductance for a big enough number of impurities in the tube manifests a systematic evolution from the localized to the ...
متن کاملSupercurrent States in 1d Finite-size Rings
We consider topological supercurrent excitations (SC) in 1D mesoscopic rings. Under certain conditions such excitations are well-defined except for (i) a tunneling between resonating states with clockwise and anti-clockwise currents, which may be characterized by the amplitude ∆, and (ii) a decay of SC assisted by phonons of the substrate, both effects being macroscopically small. Our approach ...
